What are the Types of Cataract?

Not all cataract cases are the same. Cataract frequently occurs with blurring of whole lens. Some types of cataract start with the blurring of a part of the lens and then spread to the other parts. The cataract development mostly takes years; while in some cases it occurs only in a few months. Cataract may develop in both eyes simultaneously but in different rates.

- Nuclear cataract: Opacification of the innermost nucleus in the shape of a spot.

- Cortical cataract: Opacification of the outer surface of the lens.

- Corticonuclear cataract: Opacification of the outer surface and the inner nucleus.

- Posterior capsule cataract: Opacification of the part of the lens close to posterior capsule.

- Mature cataract: Opacification of the complete lens.

- Nigra cataract: The severest state of matured cataract.
