Causes of Strabismus?

There is not only one cause of strabismus. Troubled gestation period and birth, development of child and the diseases transmitted may cause to strabismus. Genetic susceptibility is influential in strabismus. If there is strabismus history in the family, the incidence rate of strabismus increases.

In strabismus cases seen in the childhood period, in a word following the age of 2, visual impairments are often the cause of strabismus. An inflammatory disease or a trauma (falling, operations, accidents) may cause to strabismus in children having this susceptibility.

The center dominating the movement of optic muscles is in brain and therefore paralyses in nerves may cause to sight loss as well. Accidents, head traumas, inflammatory diseases, hypertension and diabetes in advanced age may cause paralysis in optic tracts. In strabismus cases occurring in this way, treatment may vary according to whether or not the paralysis is permanent. Amblyopia in children must certainly be treated due to it will cause to double vision in advancing ages.
