What Are Contact Lenses?

Refraction is one of the most important factors determining the health and quality of vision. After light enters the eye, even minor irregularities in the way it is refracted can lead to vision problems. To correct these refractive errors and ensure that light is properly focused on the retina, various medical vision correction options are available.

Contact lenses are medical devices designed to be worn directly on the surface of the cornea as an alternative to eyeglasses. While they are most commonly used for optical vision correction, contact lenses are also available for cosmetic purposes and for the treatment of certain eye conditions. As a type of ocular prosthetic device, contact lenses help correct refractive errors by improving the way light is focused onto the retina, and in some cases, they support the treatment of specific corneal or ocular diseases.

The use of contact lenses should always be based on a comprehensive eye examination and the recommendation of an ophthalmologist. Wearing contact lenses without proper medical guidance may cause structural or functional damage to the cornea and increase the risk of eye infections or other complications. For this reason, whether contact lenses are used for vision correction, therapeutic support, or cosmetic purposes, they should only be prescribed and fitted under the supervision of an eye specialist. Following the examination, the ophthalmologist determines whether contact lens use is appropriate for the patient, making this evaluation an essential part of protecting long-term eye health.
