Refractive Errors of the Eye: Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism

The relationship between light and the eye's optical structures plays an essential role in visual function and the quality of vision. Normally, light entering the eye is refracted by the cornea and lens and focused precisely on the retina, allowing clear visual perception. When abnormalities in the shape or optical properties of these structures affect the way light is focused, refractive errors and resulting vision problems may occur.

One of the most common refractive errors is myopia (nearsightedness). In myopia, light is focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it, resulting in difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. Individuals with myopia may therefore have difficulty seeing objects that are far away or becoming more distant.

In hyperopia (farsightedness), light is focused behind the retina. This can make it difficult to see nearby objects clearly and may cause visual discomfort, particularly during prolonged near-vision activities.

Another common refractive error is astigmatism. In astigmatism, light does not focus at a single point on the retina due to an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. As a result, objects and shapes may appear distorted, blurred, or tilted.

Refractive errors may be present from childhood and, depending on the individual, can affect visual function and quality of life. Depending on the patient's age, eye structure, degree of refractive error, and overall eye health, treatment options may include laser vision correction or intraocular lens procedures.

The most appropriate treatment method is determined individually following a comprehensive ophthalmological examination and the necessary diagnostic tests performed by an ophthalmologist.
