How Are Corneal Diseases Treated?
The treatment of corneal diseases is determined by a specialist ophthalmologist based on the type, severity, and progression of the condition:
- Medication: Antibiotic, antiviral, or antifungal eye drops may be used to treat infections such as keratitis. Corticosteroid-containing eye drops may also be prescribed under medical supervision to reduce inflammation.
- Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL): Corneal cross-linking is an effective treatment for progressive corneal disorders such as keratoconus. It strengthens the corneal tissue and aims to prevent further progression of the disease.
- Laser Treatments (PTK): Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) may be used to treat superficial corneal opacities, lesions, or recurrent corneal erosions.
- Corneal Transplantation (Keratoplasty): This surgical procedure may be performed in cases of advanced keratoconus, severe corneal injuries, or advanced corneal dystrophies that do not respond to other treatments. The procedure involves replacing either the entire cornea or only the affected layer with donor corneal tissue.
Important Notice: Early diagnosis of corneal diseases and the development of an individualized treatment plan by a specialist ophthalmologist are crucial for preventing permanent vision loss.
